Gravensteen

East Flanders· Castle
Description

The Gravensteen is a medieval moated castle in the heart of Ghent, built around 1180 as the residence of the Counts of Flanders. After centuries of use as a court, prison and even a cotton mill, it was restored between 1893 and 1903 into the imposing, nearly intact landmark seen today.
